The state is planning to create a separate district of Durgapur comprising the industrial belt of Durgapur and Asansol. This was disclosed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after concluding the administrative meeting in Durgapur on Saturday.
We have several plans for this area and have chalked out our plans to form industrial hubs at Durgapur,Asansol and Haldia. For making Durgapur more industrial-friendly and to develop infrastructure in the area,we have decided to make a separate district that will include Durgapur and Asansol industrial zones, said Banerjee.
Banerjee also said that helicopter service for three industrial towns Durgapur,Asansol and Haldia will begin soon.
Announcing that Steel Authority of India Limited will invest Rs 20,000 crore for expansion of its steel plant in Durgapur,the chief minister said: We are very happy that SAIL has taken a huge project in Durgapur and it is a major investment in the state. Moreover,there are proposals of setting up of an IT hub here. And,a fertilizer company is also coming up.
She also warned the coal mafias operating in the region. We have set up a commissionerate here to control the coal mafias here and the menace has been controlled to some extent. Much more needs to be done to control the mafias, she added.
Banerjee,however,avoided an answer when asked about the future of the aerotropolis at Andal in Burdwan. The project is stalled now as landlosers are demanding higher compensation.
