The police Thursday arrested one more person in connection with the killing of a third-year student who was murdered on the Sabang college campus in West Midnapore district on August 7.
Paltu Ojha, a supporter of Chhatra Parishad, the Congress’ student wing, was produced before the district court from where he was sent to six-day police custody.
Besides Ojha, three members of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress which had clashed with the supporters of CP on the fateful day, have been in police custody since their arrest soon after the incident.
Krishna Prasad Jana, a third-year BA student at Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya in Sabang, was allegedly beaten to death over his “refusal” to attend a relief distribution programme where state minister Soumen Kumar Mahapatra was to be felicitated.

According to the police, Ojha’s name had come up during the interrogation of eight CP supporters whom the police had sent notices. The presence of the accused was “corroborated” by CCTV footage obtained by the police.
Congress and CP supporters alleged that although Jana was killed by the members of TMCP, the police were now “trying to establish” what Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had claimed about the incident being a result of infighting within the CP.
“Could it ever be that a CP member killed his own colleague? It (the murder) was the handiwork of TMCP and yet police have arrested a CP activist,” Congress leader and Sabang MLA Manas Bhuniya said.
