The downsizing of Mukul Roy continued with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday removing him from the post of all-India general secretary of Trinamool Congress at a core committee meeting of the party in Kolkata.
In a fresh reshuffle, the core committee was restructured. Along with state minister Partha Chatterjee, leaders like Dinesh Trivedi, Sultan Ahmed, Subrata Bakshi, Firhad Hakim, Suvendu Adhikari and Subrata Mukherjee were inducted in the 21-member committee. Roy did not attend the meeting citing “personal work” in Delhi.
Bakshi replaced Roy as the all-India party general secretary and was also given the charge of liaison with the Election Commission — a job earlier performed by Roy.

Claiming that time would speak for the decision taken by Mamata, Roy said: “I had applied to the Election Commission for the registration of the party in 1997. Our leader was not a member at that time, later she became the chairperson. Now, the party has become large. We have 11 MPs in Rajya Sabha and 34 MPs in Lok Sabha. We have MLAs in Assam and Manipur.” “The party is in power in Bengal and we have control over almost all panchayat samitis in the state. I am still a worker of the party and a Rajya Sabha MP,” Roy, who was in Delhi, added.
At the core committee meeting held at the party’s Kalighat office, Mamata was reportedly in a belligerent mood over Roy’s hobnobbing with BJP leaders in Delhi. Sources said she was irked after reports claimed that Roy had been meeting various BJP leaders in New Delhi for the last few days.
A letter has also been sent by Trinamool to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari informing him that MP Derek O’Brien will now be the party leader in the House, thereby removing Roy and doing away with chairman of parliamentary party post.
Sources said Roy has also been removed from the presidentship of a hospital employees’ union in Kalyani. “The president of an employees’ union carries no weight but still the CM wanted to make a point by removing him. This shows her deep wrath against Mukul,” said a MP.
On Friday, Roy’s son Subhrangshu had waited for Mamata at the Assembly and touched her feet when she came out. The MLA from Bijpur, Subhrangshu had been showcaused by Trinamool for alleged anti-party activities.
Senior leader Subrata Mukherjee said, “Subhrangshu Roy and Mukul Roy’s membership in the party were not discussed. Mukul Roy was removed from his post as he had not been able give time to the party for long and did not attend meetings.”
Top leaders described the development as the “last nail in Mukul Roy’s coffin”. “Didi will never make Mukul Roy a martyr with actions like suspension or dismissal. She is pushing him to a corner where he will be forced to quit the party on his own or remain as a non-entity within the Trinamool,” a source said.
