Social activist Medha Patkar Monday accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of “spreading lies” in public meetings about getting free power from the Sardar Sarovar Project on Narmada river.

“At public rallies,Modi said if the Narmada dam is built people of the region will get free electricity. It is a blatant lie. People will have to pay for the electricity,” Patkar said.

Adressing a seminar on the ‘Balanced approach to the New Land Acquisition Act,2013 organised by Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata, she also slammed Modi’s model of development as a “corporate model”

“If its Modi model of Gujarat, then its corporate model. The people are fighting in every district of Gujarat where their land has been given to corporates,” Patkar said

She said instead of constructing a statue of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, which Modi will christen as Statue of Unity,“he should build a statue of justice”.

The activist was all praise for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her opposition to forcible acquisition of land in Singur.

She said all political parties should help the TMC government in its efforts to return land to those farmers “who did not accept compensation for their land”
