Following directions from the State Election Commission,Murshidabad districts Returning Officer Monday lodged police a complaint against Union Minister of State for Railways Adhir Chowdhury for his speech during a public meeting on October 27 there.
Confirming this,Murshidabad SP Humayun Kabir said,A case under section 171C of the IPC (undue influence at elections) has been registered against the minister.
However, the section, say police officials,is bailable, although they have not ruled out the possibility of arresting Chowdhury. The minister is currently in Delhi.
Murshidabad DM Y Ratnakar Rao had,on November 1,submitted a report to the commission, which is said to have stated that Chowdhury had made offensive remarks against the police and TMC leaders at a public meeting on October 27,thereby violating the model code of conduct.
In the meeting, called by the Congress at Baharampur,Chowdhury had reportedly threatened to smash the heads if the TMC,with the help of the police, tries to capture booths during the municipal election in Murshidabad scheduled for November 22.
You (TMC and the police) like to threaten us. But we dont care. I shall smash your heads if you try to terrorize my party supporters and activists, Chowdhury had reportedly said.
Following the speech, the local TMC leaders had lodged a complaint with the state election commission.
