A mob of around 150 people allegedly assaulted a 19-year-old girl in New Town area of Kolkata on Tuesday, blaming her for the death of a 22-year-old man, who ‘committed’ suicide. The mob even allegedly assaulted cops and damaged a police vehicle when they tried to rescue the girl, sources said.
Surajit Roy (22) allegedly hung himself in his house in New Town’s Santimoynagar in the morning, police sources said. Following the death, locals caught hold of Puja Haldar (19) of Ananda Pally, accusing her of pressurising Roy for marriage.
“Today at around 7.10 am, SI Suman Bhattacharya of New Town police station along with other police personnel were on patrolling duty. The SI received an information about some public agitation at Santimoynagar over a suicide incident. Upon reaching the spot, police found Puja being assaulted by a large number of people. Police immediately tried to rescue her but the mob attacked them and started throwing stones. As a result, some cops were seriously injured. A police vehicle was also damaged. Somehow they managed to rescue the girl,” said an official of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
Police sources said the girl sustained serious injuries. Roy’s father Sanjit has lodged a complaint under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC against the girl, while a suo moto case has been initiated against those who attacked the girl and the police, sources said.
