Medical Council bill sparks war of words

CPM’s Anisur Rahman said that Mamata’s surprise visits hampered patients as the CM is accompanied by huge contingents of journalists and locals. He said patients panic when they see huge crowds with the CM.

An incensed Mamata replied that CPM leaders were conspiring against her government and gathering local people to malign her. Locals had entered hospitals and broken saline bottles,blood bottles and created a ruckus with the support of the Left Front,she alleged. During the Left Front regime,the skeleton scam took place and the Opposition was now trying to politicise health,she charged.

Trinamool members said the West Bengal Medical Council had failed to dispose of many penal and ethical cases related to medical negligence,thereby hampering public and professional interest. Senior officials of the state health department,however,added that around 1,500 cases of medical negligence had been kept pending for a few years as election of the council was long overdue.
