Didi’s decision comes in the wake of ‘mounting complaints of non-performance’

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee clipped the wings of Mayor Sovan Chatterjee by taking away three important departments — bustee development, assessment collection and market — from him,as a result of mounting criticism against the performance of these departments.

The departments have been re-allocated to existing MMICs. Atin Ghosh has been given bustee development. He is the existing MMIC (health).

Debobrato Mazumder,MMIC (solid waste management) has been allotted assessment collection, while Debasish Kumar, the present MMIC (parks, gardens and sports) has been put in charge of market as well.

Mayor Sovon Chatterjee,MLA of Behala (East) constituency,is known to be in the CMs shadow and is more sighted at the Writers’ than his KMC office. He said it was nothing out of the ordinary.

“What is the problem if I give some of my departments to my MMICs? There is no question of any under performance and there is no question of any ill-feelings either. Everything has been done in consultation with the chief minister,” he said.

The political circles further said the contradictory comments made by the chief minister and the mayor during the recent fire at the slums of Kalikapur could be one of the immediate provocations for such an action.

“While the CM had promised that there will be houses put up for the rehabilitation of the slum dwellers who were rendered homeless by the fire, the mayor had brushed aside any such possibilities, saying it was impossible,” said a senior CPM leader.

Rupa Bagchi,a leader of the Opposition at KMC said it was part of the TMC culture to keep a number of departments with one person and the CM herself led with such an example. “The mayor was holding 11 different departments. It is good to see that he has finally given some to others but the ones who got these departments have performed well with their existing departments till now,” she said, citing the example of Atin Ghosh.
