In an alleged incident of custodial death,a CPM worker who was picked up by the Kolkata Police on Sunday died late in the evening yesterday.

A resident of Kultali in South 24 Parganas,35-year-old Karim Gazi had complained of chest pain yesterday evening and was rushed to a government hospital where he died late at night,a senior police official said.

It remains unknown as to what charges Gazi was arrested under. His family members have lodged a complaint with the Kultali police station where he was kept in the custody.

“We have initiated a departmental inquiry. If we find any negligence, the responsible officer will be suspended and proper action will be taken,” the official added.

When contacted,Sujan Chakraborty,CPM’s district secretary, said the police had “arrested Gazi on suspicion.”

“He was politically framed. And the politically motivated police picked him up even though his name did not figure in any of the FIRs. We do not know why he was arrested. He was badly beaten up in the custody. The police, however, are trying to make it look like he died from cardiac arrest. We want a judicial inquiry into the incident,” Chakraborty said.
