Mamata talks jobs,peace & development

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday promised to provide employment to 10 lakh people in the next fiver years,if her party is voted to power in the next Assembly elections.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday promised to provide employment to 10 lakh people in the next fiver years,if her party is voted to power in the next Assembly elections.

Addressing a mammoth public meeting at Satighat in Bankura from where her rival and Chief Minster Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee addressed a rally on Saturday,Banerjee hit back at the Left Front government, which had criticised her inuguration spree.

Reading out a list of the number of factories and projects which she inaugurated in her capacity as railway minister in the past one year,Banerjee said: “The CPM will be taken aback when all these (factories and projects) start functioning in full swing. If so many factories can be started in one year, then think of what could be done in five years. There will be no dearth of industries in Bengal.”

Pointing to the “huge” brain drain from Bengal in the Left Front’s 34 years of rule,Banerjee accused the CPM of destroying agriculture as well as industries in the state, and fooling the people in the name of development. “Areas in this district (Bankura) like Mukutmanipur,Chatna,Sonamukhi and Kotolpur have great tourism potential. The CPM has only captured these areas by using brute force, but has not done anything for their development,” she said.

She,however, told the estimated six lakh people who had gathered to listen her that railway ministry would not be able to start any project in the district as Railways do not have any land there.

“I welcome any move by individuals to give land to the Railways,” she said, adding that the land needed for the two projects at Adra and Anara were not forcibly acquired. “I had not acquired land with the help of the gun,” she said apparently hinting at the state government’s botched efforts at Nandigram.

Harping on the issue of development, the Trinamool chief said it can be brought about only by caring for people and everybody irrespective of party colours should participate. “Keep faith on Trinamool Congress as it is the only hope in Bengal,” she said.

Once again raising her demand of the withdrawal of forces from the Moaist-affected Junglemahal, she said her party favours peace through development in the area.

“Peace cannot come from the barrel of a gun but only through development. People all over the state want peace. They want peace in Darjeeling and Junglemahal. Joint forces can never bring peace and they should go back,” she said at the public meeting.

“How many armed goons does the CPM have ? One lakh, two lakh? There are ten crore people in West Bengal. They will give you (CPM) a fitting reply. I will oust CPM politically from Bengal. I promise I will,” she added.
