In a bid to steal the show from the CPM,which is organising a massive rally in Kolkata on August 31 to observe 50 years of the Food Movement, the Trinamool Congress will be holding a rally on the same day in Midnapore to protest, among other things, rising prices of essential commodities.
Interestingly, the mother of Nurul Islam, who died in police firing in 1966 and became the poster boy of the Marxist movement, will attend the Trinamool’s rally.
The Trinamool MP from Tamluk,Subhendu Adhikary, who has been instructed by party chief Mamata Banerjee to mobilise as many people as possible, said: “The CPM is organising the rally to commemorate the Food Movement. What we are saying is that there is a food crisis in Bengal and people are dying of hunger. But the Left Front government has failed to do anything to contain the crisis.”
“In fact we wanted to hold the rally at Amlasole in Jhargram where seven people had died of starvation, three years ago. But the SDO said that Section 144 is in place in the entire sub-division,” Adhikary added.
The party plans to mobilise at least one lakh people to the rally, where Firoza Bibi, the Trinamool MLA from Nandigram who lost her son in the March 14 police firing in 2007,and mothers of seven people who died at Amlasole because of starvation, will also attend the rally.
