Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday reached the SSKM Hospital where the body of 22-year-old Sudipta Gupta was kept to pay her condolences. But she had to make an hurried exit following chanting of slogans against her by the SFI supporters.

Speaking to the mediapersons, she termed the episode as “unfortunate”,but evaded a question on whether a judicial probe would be ordered as demanded by the CPM.

“Any death is unfortunate. This is also unfortunate. I will not say anything more than this,” Banerjee told reporters here outside the state-run SSKM Hospital where SFI leader Sudipta Gupta’s body was kept.

Banerjee supported the police theory saying the SFI leader was killed after he collided against a lamp post, and claimed that many of her own party workers had died in the same manner earlier.

CPM demands judicial probe

New Delhi/ Kolkata: The CPM on Wednesday demanded a judicial probe into the death of Sudipta Gupta, refuting the police’s claim that he died after falling down from a bus.

“Under police custody, such a death is something that cannot be accepted. The police version (that he died after falling from the bus) is incredulous. Therefore,we think there should be a judicial inquiry into this,” said CPM MP Sitaram Yechury in Delhi. In Kolkata,CPM state committee secretary Biman Bose said the government was trying to cover up the “custodial death” as an “accidental death.” He too demanded judicial probe into the entire episode.
