PEEVED by the Centre’s package of Rs 12,000 crore to Bihar,West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday called the UPA government’s decision as another instance of “political discrimination”.

“Is it not undemocratic and unethical to provide funds to those states which suit Centre’s policies?” Mamata wrote on social-networking website Facebook indicating the Centre’s overtures to woo Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has publicly said that anyone giving financial package to the state would have his support.

Mamata then goes on to add,“Why West Bengal is being singularly deprived? Is it a political vendetta, guided by narrow politics?”

Reiterating her stand on a “transparent debt-restructuring plan”,she said the state should be given a chance to invest revenue earned for infrastructure development. She slammed the Centre saying,“Instead of providing financial help to West Bengal every year, the Centre is taking away over Rs 25,000 crore from us to meet interest and repayment for debt, for which our (party’s) government had no responsibility”,she added.

Banerjee said: “All we want is not to stand before the central government with a begging bowl. We want justice.” She further pointed out that the financial indiscipline of previous regime has totally destroyed the state.

“The 12th Finance Commission has identified West Bengal as one of the most debt-stressed states. Also no other state has a huge debt of Rs 2 lakh crore thrust by the previous government” she wrote.

Banerjee also blamed the Centre for allowing the previous (Left Front) government to continue with their borrowings without introducing Fiscal Responsibility Budget Management Act (2003).

For a long time,Mamata has been demanding a three-year moratorium on the interests and the repayment of loans.
