The Calcutta High Court on Friday sought Professor Ambikesh Mahapatras view in connection with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against the state governments refusal to pay him compensation following his arrest.
The professor had approahed the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) after he was arrested for allegedly circulating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjees cartoon last year.
The rights panel had recommended that the state pay Mahapatra a compensation amount of Rs 50,000,which the state refused.
The division bench headed by Chief Justice Arun Mishra asked Mahapatra to inform the High Court about his view on the PIL within two weeks.
