Members of Joint Council of Luxury Taxi Association held a demonstration in Kolkata on Monday demanding fare hike and protested against the alleged government apathy towards private vehicles being used commercially. “In the last four years, there had been no hike in fare despite the escalating costs,” said Shankar Ghosh, secretary of the association. “We pay almost four times the taxes paid by private vehicle owners. We should be issued a West Bengal permit so that the vehicles can freely ply across the state,” he added. Senior members of the association met state transport minister but were not satisfied with the outcome. “We have been given assurances repeatedly. We will wait till next Thursday and then take a decision,” said Ghosh.
