‘Love react’ on an ex-girlfriend’s post leads to violent clash between married couple’s families; police lodge complaint

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.A dispute over an Instagram ‘love’ reaction to a husband’s alleged ex-girlfriend’s photo escalated into a violent clash in Jalpaiguri, leaving his sister-in-law severely injured.

A woman and her sister were allegedly assaulted by her husband and his family in the Dhupguri area of West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district after she confronted him for reacting with a ‘love’ emoji on a picture shared by his purported former girlfriend on social media platform Instagram, police said.

Three persons were injured, one seriously, in the incident that took place at Domohani village on Saturday, it is learnt.

In her police complaint, Rubina said when she opened her husband Shahjahan’s phone she noticed that he had reacted with a ‘love’ emoji on a picture uploaded by his former girlfriend.

Rubina said she was aware of his former girlfriend when they got married over a year ago.

When he read his chats with the woman, she found that the two were regularly communicating with each other, she claimed, adding the conversations even included inappropriate messages.

She confronted Shahjahan over the issue, and it led to an altercation, she said.

Rubina said then she called her sister, Beauty Parveen, who lives nearby, for help.

Beauty alleged that she rushed to Rubina’s in-laws’ house after she heard of her sister being beaten up. She further claimed that Shahjahan and his family members attacked her as well when she tried to intervene. She claimed to have been hit with a bucket and a shovel by Shahjahan’s sister Rabeya. She allegedly fell on the floor with severe head injuries.

Shahjahan’s mother was also injured in the scuffle, police said.

Residents got Beauty and Rubina admitted to Dhupguri Sub-Divisional Hospital. Police arrived soon after being informed. A police complaint has been filed in Dhupguri, and an investigation has been initiated, officials said.
