The US Embassy in New Delhi was thrown open to the public Tuesday, but barricades are still on at the American Consul General in Ho Chi Minh Sarani, with Kolkata Police maintaining they have not got any orders to remove them. Any order on removing restriction near a consulate would require inputs from the central intelligence.
Yesterday,Delhi Police removed barricades from the American Embassy in Chanakyapuri as part of the ongoing diplomatic row with the US. Rajeev Mishra, joint commissioner of the police said,There is no change in the security system around the US consulate office.Officials at the US consulate refused to speak to the media today.
In other US consulate offices, barricades were placed to restrict traffic, but in Kolkata, barricades were put up after the terrorist attack in January 2002,in which motorcycle-borne assassins of the Asif Reza Commando Force fired at the security personnel, killing five constables and injuring 16 others. Since then, the American Center, which houses the USIS library and the consulates public affairs wing, was behind barricades.
