Of the 45 seats of the newly-formed Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) in Darjeeling hills, voting took place in 17 seats on Sunday. Superintendent of Police (Darjeeling) Kunal Agarwal said the voting passed off peacefully in all the 292 polling booths as there had been no untoward incident from any part of the hills.

In the 28 seats of the GTA,the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) candidates have won without any contest. The CPM had earlier withdrawn from the contest. So did the Trinamool Congress, though at the last stage. The GJM forming the GTA has therefore become a forgone conclusion.

Some Trinamool nominees, however, fought the election because,as they contended, they had not been communicated about the party’s decision to withdraw from the contest in time.

In the 14 seats at Kalimpong and Darjeeling sub-divisions,candidates of the GJM,Trinamool Congress as well as an Independent candidate are in the fray. The Independent candidate is contesting against the GJM candidate at Nimdong constituency in Kalimpong.

According to the officials,70 per cent voters have exercised their francise in these constituencies.

Voters of three booths — Belgachi,Panighata and Sukna — did not vote.

While people of Belgachi and Panighata said they do not want to join the GTA,voters in Sukna boycotted the election saying there has been no development in the area in the past few years.
