The Left parties in Bengal have questioned Governor M K Narayanan’s “unusual” move of holding a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss a bailout package for the state.

Leader of Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra said,“We do not know what exactly he discussed. But we can see that the state government, which disagreed with the governor on certain issues, now depends on the governor for these issues. It seems that the Trinamool now might decide to vote in the presidential election as a face-saving tactic.”

Apart from Singh,Narayanan had also met other Union ministers. All the meetings were on issues related to Bengal, sources said.

Senior CPM leader Rabin Deb said,“The demands of a state government are always placed by the CM. CM Mamata Banerjee has held several meetings with the Prime Minister and discussed the financial package. We have never seen a governor holding meetings on state issues when the state is led by a chief minister.”

Former CPM MP Mohammad Selim said,“I am not sure what was discussed in the meeting. I think the subject of the meeting should be disclosed first.”

Manjukumar Majumdar,CPI state secretary, said,“People are confused as to who is leading the governmen — the CM or governor. We don’t understand how the governor can meet the PM and discuss the financial package when it is not President’s rule.”
