Bidhannagar Police on Tuesday arrested eight persons in connection with the murder of a land promoter in New Town.

Police said the murder was the fallout of a land dispute. The assailants on Sunday shot the promoter, Chanchal Mondal (46), at his house and he had sustained injuries on his stomach, chest and face. Chanchal was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

A case was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several person in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Arms Act, police said.

Five land promoters, Ajitesh Haldar (38) of Patharghata Bazar, Subhas Mondal (38) of Natunpukur, Bikash Mondal (35) of Patharghata Mondalpara, Nilmadhav Saha (34) of Bhangar, MD Rafique Molla (32) were detained initially.

Based on their statements, three hired killers, Mohar Laskar (42) of Jibantala, Sk Sirazul (42) and Sk Rafique (25) of East Midnapore were arrested, police said.

“The main conspirators are Ajitesh Haldar and Bikash Mondal. Dispute over land-related business was the reason behind the murder. Prima facie Chanchal was not honest in his dealings. So they thought if he is removed their business will prosper and they made a conspiracy to eliminate him,” said DC (Headqaurters) Amit Javalgi.

Ajitesh conspired with the four other promoters to execute the plan. They planned the murder during Durga Puja and paid the hired killers Rs 2 lakh, police claimed.
