The 24-year-old student who was allegedly raped inside a law college campus in Kolkata appeared before a magistrate at a court in Alipore on Saturday and recorded her statement under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). There was a heavy police deployment at the court premises to prevent any untoward incidents.

The student was allegedly raped, assaulted, and threatened inside a room on the college premises on Wednesday. Four people have been arrested in the case so far, including the main accused, Monojit Mishra, who has links with the Trinamool Congress, his alleged associates Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, and security guard Pinaki Banerjee.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the student’s counsel said that the student had called her and revealed that she had been raped. “I advised her to consult her parents and lodge an FIR,” the counsel said, adding that she was traumatised and in a “complete state of shock”. According to the counsel, the student and her family are in a safe place.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women, Leena Gangopadhyay, met the student and spoke to her for about an hour. “She narrated the incident as much as she could. She has anxiety and panic attacks,” Gangopadhyay said.

“We had a counsellor with us and informed her that in the future, if she requires any form of assistance or counselling, we will be with her. We will see that the police submit a strong chargesheet. We have also advised her to go for some counselling,” she added.

The medical report of the student has confirmed several abrasion marks on her body and said that “sexual assault cannot be ruled out”.
