A close aide of BJP leader Rakesh Singh has been arrested in connection with the drug seizure case, police said on Monday. With this, six persons, including BJP leaders Pamela Goswami and Rakesh Singh, have been arrested in connection with the seizure of 76 grams of heroin from a car in New Alipore on February 19.

Suraj Kumar Shaw was arrested from Orphangunge market under Watgunge police station area. It is alleged that Rakesh Singh had allegedly told Shaw to keep the drug in the car.

According to police, prima facie, Shaw was instructed by Rakesh Singh to take a scooty and wait near the spot where the drug was seized by the police.

“Amrit Raj Singh, who is wanted in the case, escaped from the spot on the same scooty with Shaw’s help,” a Kolkata Police officer said.

According to police, when the drug was seized, there were five people in the car. “While three got arrested, two managed to escape. One of those who escaped was Amrit Raj Singh… We have CCTV footage. In one of them, it is visible that someone is keeping something in the car in black polythene. Investigation is underway,” said an official.

Police are now looking for Singh to know who all are connected to the alleged drug haul.

Meanwhile, Rakesh Singh’s police custody was extended to March 9 by a local court.

Pamela has accused Rakesh Singh of a conspiracy to frame her.
