Kolkata deputy mayor questions police theory on husband’s death

POLICE have arrested the driver of the truck which reportedly collided with a bike and killed the rider here on Wednesday.

POLICE have arrested the driver of the truck which reportedly collided with a bike and killed the rider here on Wednesday. The rider was identified as Abdul Momin, the husband of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Farzana Alam.

Driver Santosh Yadav was arrested on Thursday from the truck terminus at Dhulagarh and slapped with murder charges.

Momin’s family, however, were not convinced by the accident theory put forward by the police. While the police said it was a hit and run case,Farzana alleged there were several irregularities in the police report.

She met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday and, according to sources, sought a CID inquiry because she “did not have faith in the way police had been handling the case”.

On Wednesday,Farzana lodged a missing complaint at Kasba police station when her husband did not return home even an hour and a half past his usual time of 8 pm. Later,Leather Complex police station got in touch with Kasba police station regarding a body, which was later identified as Momin.

Police sources said Momin,a lawyer by profession, was returning home when a truck collided with his bike and crushed him near Bantala Leather Complex.

“If the death occurred between 7 and 9 in the evening on Wednesday, and police got to know from the bike’s registration number that the deceased was a Kasba resident, why was the family informed the next morning?” asked a relative of Momin.

The family also questioned why the bike was not damaged after such a serious accident.
