Two Kolkata cops arrested for ‘extorting Rs 4 lakh’ from taxi driver

The accused, Kaushik Ghosh and Mohammad Montil, were attached to the detective department. The alleged incident took place near Kolkata Police headquarters

Two Kolkata Police officials have been arrested on charges of allegedly extorting around Rs 4 lakh from a taxi driver. The accused, Kaushik Ghosh and Mohammad Montil, were attached to the detective department.

The duo allegedly threatened to frame the driver in a false drugs case. The incident occurred on August 29 near Mahakaran.

According to the complaint filed with Karaya police station, on August 29 this year, the accused availed the taxi from Ballygunge Circular Road, stopped the car near Mahakaran, and introduced themselves as police officers to intimidate the driver.

The driver, fearing the false case and confiscation of his vehicle, purportedly handed over Rs 1.95 lakh in installments.

The incident has caused a stir within the police department, given that it took place near the headquarters of Kolkata Police.
