A 25-year-old man died after his motorcycle collided head-on with a car at Deshpran Sasmal Road in Tollygunge area of the metropolis late on Friday. Witnesses said both vehicles were speeding and the deceased was not wearing a helmet.
According to the police, the vehicles, which were coming from opposite directions at high speed, collided at around 2.30 am after the driver of the Hyundai car lost control. Sajal Kairi, who was riding the bike, and pillon rider Biswanath Ghosh fell on the road, sustaining severe head injuries. They were rushed to M R Bangur Hospital where Kairi succumbed to his injuries at around 7.10 am on Saturday.
At the time of the accident, the car driver, Yash Choudhury, who also sustained minor injuries, fled the spot.
A few hours later, he surrendered at Charu Market police station, where he was arrested under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
Police said this is the second fatal accident caused by speeding in the city over the past week, indicating a rise in late-night speeding. A 22-year-old had died after a speeding Mercedes hit his bike from behind on Hazra Road in the early hours of last Sunday.
