With the BJP and Trinamool Congress scheduled to hold rallies at the Brigade Parade Grounds in January ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Left Front said it would hold one of its own at the venue in February. The decision taken was during a meeting of Left party leaders on Tuesday.
“The rally will be held in the first week of February and much before the commencement of state board examinations. We will ask all Left parties to attend the rally,” said Forward Bloc state secretary Naren Chatterjee.
According to a senior CPM leader, the party does not wish to leave an inch to either TMC or BJP ahead of the polls and therefore it is of utmost importance that they too remain visible in organising political activities. “The BJP and the TMC have started their poll preparations and have lined up several rallies. We will also hold several rallies and public meetings ahead of the polls. It is important for Left parties to intensify its political activities and not leave an inch of space to either TMC or BJP. Our slogan is simple which is BJP Hatao Desh Bachao, TMC Hatao Bangla Bachao (Remove BJP Save Country, Remove TMC Save Bengal),” said the CPM leader on the condition of anonymity.
The BJP has lined up three Rath Yatras across West Bengal in December and the January rally is expected to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The TMC will hold a Brigade rally on January 19 and has invited like-minded Opposition parties to attend it in its efforts to unite the Opposition against the BJP.
