Twenty-odd people from Kamduni, including the family members, neighbours and friends of the 20-year-old girl who was gangraped and killed in Barasat last month,on Monday met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention in ordering a CBI probe into the incident.

They told the President that the ongoing probe carried out by the CID of West Bengal Police is shoddy, and noted the trial court proceedings in this regard. A fast-track court had recently pulled up the CID for filing a weak chargesheet with glaring errors and directed the state agency to file a complete chargesheet.

“We have demanded a CBI investigation in the case because we know the main accused are roaming free in the neighbouring village. They are being protected by the government,” said Pradip Mukherjee, the headmaster of a local primary school, who was showcaused by the state’s Primary Education Council for taking out a protest march on the issue on June 22. Undeterred,Mukherjee said the residents would wait for justice to prevail.

The victim’s father and brothers also met the President and broke down while speaking to him.

“We have no faith in the CID investigation. We asked the President to order a CBI inquiry and that justice should be delivered fast,” one of the family members said.

“The President said he will try his level best to get justice for the family. He assured us that justice will not be denied to us,” the victim’s kin added.

The group said that the President told them he would forward their demand for a CBI probe to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. Ever since the protests by the locals erupted over the incident, pressure has been mounting from the police as well as local goons who are allegedly patronised by the ruling Trinamool Congress. The main accused, according to the complaint lodged with the police, belong to the Trinamool.
