Vice-Chancellor of Kalyani University Saroj Sanyal met Agricultural Secretary Subrata Biswas in Kolkata on Monday and handed over a report on the alleged Rs 100 crore scam in the institution between 2010 and 2012.

Sources in the agriculture department said Sanyal is said to have told Biswas that he was not involved in irregular activities. “As the vice-chancellor,I am morally responsible. But I am dependent on the controller and the registrar who prepare the list for government funds,” said Sanyal after meeting Biswas.

Few months ago,the government ordered a probe into the alleged financial irregularities at Kalyani’s Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya after an inquiry revealed that salaries were issued in the name of dead or retired employees. The scam was pegged to be at Rs 100 crore.

Sub-Divisional Officer (Kalyani) Saibal Chakraborty, who conducted the inquiry, said: “We have also detected irregularities in awarding the scholarships. According to our initial findings, the irregularities may cross Rs 100 crore.”

It is,however, not clear for how many years the alleged scam went on. According to the Chakraborty’s report,a copy of which has been submitted to the department,an annual salary of around Rs 12 lakh was released this year in the name of Shyamal Ghosh,a professor of genetics, who died on February 24,2011.
