The police Wednesday filed its chargesheet in the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in South-24 Parganas’ Kakdwip on November 21, naming two persons, Gopal Hazra and Sukdev Patra.
The chargesheet, which comes in less than a month, was submitted before the Additional and Sessions Judge Arun Kiran Bandopadhyay, applying charges under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (evidence tampering), 376 (I) (A) (assault during rape ultimately resulting in death), 380 (theft) of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, against the two accused.
“The chargesheet stated that Hazra was acquainted to the family and was the one to rape and then strangulate the girl to death fearing she would give away his identity. He had then taken the belongings of the victim and given it away to Patra,” an official of Kakdwip police station said.
The chargesheet was supplemented with the post-mortem report of the victim, a forensic report and accounts of the 30 witnesses who had been interrogated during the course of the investigation.
The victim’s family had alleged that the police initially excluded rape charge against the accused. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had directed the police to submit a chargesheet within 20 days.
