Judge transfers stall Park Street rape hearing

THE trial in the Park Street rape case has been stalled following a Calcutta High Court order to transfer 131 additional district and sessions judges from their present posts to 43 regular courts and 88 permanent fast-track courts.

THE trial in the Park Street rape case has been stalled following a Calcutta High Court order to transfer 131 additional district and sessions judges from their present posts to 43 regular courts and 88 permanent fast-track courts.

The court issued the order for their transfer on March 25 with effect from April 1.

Madhuchanda Bose,Additional District and Sessions Judge of the third fast track court at the city sessions court,had been holding the trial in the Park Street rape case. Bose has now been transferred to the second fast track court at the city sessions court with effect from April 1.

On March 14,the rape victim gave her statement in the third fast track court in camera and the court fixed April 5,6 and 8 for the next date of trial. But trial has been stalled for the time being as no judge has been posted at the third fast track court according to the order of the High Court.

Advocate Ashoke Bakshi,a counsel of one of the accused,said that it cannot be said when the trial would resume. The High Court could transfer the case to some other fast track court at the city sessions court,which will require some time.
