An engineering student of Jadavpur University has filed a police complaint alleging that he had to leave the university because of severe ragging by four senior students in his hostel.

Siddhanta Mundra,a second-year student of mechanical engineering, also received death threats according to his FIR filed in Kandi police station of Murshidabad, his hometown.

Kandi IC Sunoyon Basu today confirmed having received the complaint on October 1.

In his FIR,Siddhanta alleged that he was forced to take drugs in the Jadavpur Boys Hostel. Other students would allegedly tease him as he did not smoke or drink. At times they would force him to drink liquor and be subjected to physical torture,he said. All this forced Siddhanta to shift to a private mess.

However, his ordeal did not stop there. He also received letters carrying death threats, which prompted Siddhanta to leave the mess, his father Ramesh Chandra Mundra said.

Jadavpur University dean Rajat Roy said Mundra had not informed the authorities before leaving. “But we want him back in the university. He is a meritorious student. The university authorities will do everything to support him. All he has to do is come to us,” Roy added.

Roy also advised the student’s father to lodge a complaint with the university and register a general diary at Jadavpur police station.

Ramesh Chandra Mundra, however, said he had already gone to Jadavpur police station but his complaint was not registered.

“Even the university authorities refused to accept any written complaint. They called me up after hearing that we had lodged an FIR with the police at Kandi. The vice-chancellor called to have a discussion. But what will they discuss now, when they refused to take action earlier?”
