With 227 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) crashing down on the eve of the polls in the first and second phases of elections in the state, political parties on Tuesday expressed their displeasure over the EVMs distributed by the Election Commission.

After checking the EVMs,which have been replaced by the Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL),an engineer of the ECIL said the results of the mock polls were not deleted before the polling began. “The EVMs got jammed. It is a common defect we have found in the EVMs,” he said.

However, the Opposition parties are not satisfied. “We have proof that EVMs have been re-programmed in several places. We have got specific reports that in many places the results of the mock polls were not deleted and the results have been added with the result of the actual polls. So we do not believe that the EVMs are tamper-proof,” said Partho Chatterjee, leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Chatterjee said there are reports that many presiding officers have been deployed in the booths in the same area where they reside.

State Chief Electoral Officer Debashis Sen said that according to the EC guidelines,a government official cannot be sent to a booth as the presiding officer where he resides.
