Two days after a tribal woman was allegedly raped and an iron rod was inserted in her private parts, Jalpaiguri police on Monday arrested two people including the prime accused — her brother-in-law’s son — in connection with the case.
“The two have been arrested under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 34 (common intention),” Jalpaiguri SP Amitava Maity told The Indian Express. Police sources said one of the accused allegedly raped the woman and the other was present at the spot.
Sources said district police have been instructed by higher-ups to treat the case with utmost urgency, and that they are likely to file a chargesheet in the next two days.
The woman’s condition was said to be critical when she was brought to the hospital, however she is now stable and responding to treatment. Doctors however, said she had a chance of developing an infection. “The victim’s is receiving the best possible treatment,” said a police officer.
The victim has recorded her statement with the police. Sources said the accused had confessed to the crime.
Police said the victim’s husband and his brother had a dispute over a plot in Jalpaiguri. The former had also been threatened earlier.
On Saturday, the accused had allegedly told the victim to accompany her claiming he wanted to sit and sort out the property dispute.
“She trusted him and left her home. She was taken to a deserted area near a pond located close to her home and was raped. After she threatened to lodge a police complaint and started screaming, the prime accused took the brutality to another level and inserted an iron rod into her private parts. She was later found lying unconscious by a local resident,” said a local police officer.
