A group of Bengali intellectuals such as poet Joy Goswami and social activist Sujato Bhadra urged citizens of Bengal to vote against the CPM and put an end to the ‘violence and oppression they have been facing for the past three decades’.

They were speaking at a conference as members of Friends for Democracy,an organisation that works to uphold the democratic process in the state. Also present were Prof. Kalyan Rudra,Prof. Bhaskar Gupta and Panchu Roy.

They released a book Shomosto Bangla Ekjoge Boluk CPM Na (Let the whole of Bengal say no to CPM) on alleged atrocities committed by the government since 1977. The book, they said, focuses on the failures of the government in various aspects such as health, education, industry and human rights. It is a compilation of various reports.,investigations and first-hand experience.

Goswami said,“The history of Anandamargi and Marichjhapi has led to Nandigram and Netai today. It’s time we voice our opinion and say no to them. They have managed to suppress people’s voice for 36 years, but not any more.”

Asked whether they were asking people to support to a particular non-CPM party,Sujato Bhadra replied that the people of Bengal were capable of making their own choice. Friends of Democracy was just cautioning them against the consequences of electing the Left Front government for the eighth time,he said.

The organisation raised a number of issues and demands that should be addressed by the government. Bhadra said they were expecting a historic change on May 13,the day the election results will be declared. However,if the new government works against the values of democracy, their organisation will protest against that government, too.

The Friends of Democracy had called for defeating the CPM before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
