The Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) has inducted the largest batch of 462 students nearly 100 more than last year for its flagship postgraduate programme in management this year to fulfill the 27 per cent quota for OBC students. Last year, the institute couldnt meet the required OBC quota because of lack of infrastructure. IIM-C Director Sekhar Choudhoury said the institute plans to fix the students intake at about 500 in the years ahead. However, only seven per cent students this year are girls down by five per cent from last year. Officials said the institute has been struggling to have more diversity in its students and a parity in terms of gender but blamed the fewer presence of female students on strong quantitative bias of the Common Admission Test. this year, about 95 per cent students who have taken admission have engineering background. There has been an increase in the number of students with work experience too. About 70 per cent students joining IIM-C this year have more than one years of work experience, said Professor Janakiraman Moorthy,Chairperson (Admissions) at IIM-C. We give weightage to work experience. If students with work experience join they can appreciate the content of our programme, added Moorthy. Moreover,26 students inducted into the programme are international students.
