The people of the hills today witnessed public rallies addressed by all the three main political parties in the region including GJM,GNLF and All India Gorkha League.
GNLF chief Subhash Ghising, addressing the meeting today, said,“We will lend only conditional support to mainstream political parties and our condition is to get the New Hill Gorkha Council bill passed and implemented under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.”
He further said the people of the hills should realise that Gorkhaland is never possible. “Neither the Central government nor the Bengal government will allow the state to be divided. Moreover,Gorkhaland can never bring the solution the people of hill want as there will be no protection for non-Gorkhas. But the Sixth Schedule will give constitutional guarantee to rights of hill tribes,” he said.
GJM chief Bimal Gurung, said the people of the hills will have to support them if they want Gorkhaland. “We are not any more thinking about the interim set up. Our agenda is to have the Gorkhaland state.”
At the same venue,Bharti Tamang, wife of slain AIGL chief Madan Tamang, said,“If you want justice for Madan Tamang who was killed for the cause of Gorkhaland, then the people should vote for us. Madan Tamang was only true to the cause and that is why he was silenced.”
