The GJM leadership today declared that the party will participate in upcoming GTA elections, which is scheduled to be held on July 29. The GJM leadership also said the party has dropped all agitation programmes against the government.

“We will participate in the GTA polls. We have asked chief secretary for a symbol,as we did not have a symbol. We have asked for the symbol of sun. Our president will announce the candidates soon,” said GJM general secretary Roshan Giri after the core committee meeting today.

The tribal leader from Terai and Dooars region,Jhon Barla, was also present in the meeting. “We are participating in the elections for the peace and development of the region. The people of Terai and Dooars also want us to contest the elections and the people of those areas, which were not included in the GTA,also want us to contest,” Giri said.

According to the sources in the GJM ranks and files,GJM president Bimal Gurung has been asked by the core committee leaders to contest the elections as a candidate from a major seat in Darjeeling . However, sources said Gurung is yet to decide on this.

The GJM leadership, however, reiterated that the party will not go for an alliance with the Trinamool Congress in the GTA elections. “We will not go for alliance in the election,we can contest alone in the hills. We have a good relation with the TMC, but we will have no tie-up with it in this election. However, all political parties can field their candidates since it is a democratic process,” said Giri.
