Gay pride walks into 12th edition

With a photograph of late actor-director Rituparno Ghosh,members of the LGBT (Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual and Transgender) community of Kolkata walked the distance. From Hazra More to Academy of Fine Arts,under the banner of Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk 2013,to spread the message of social inclusiveness.

Dressed in bright clothes,colourful masks and hairdos,about 500 members of the community chanted slogans such as ‘it is my body,my right’ and ‘Love the person,not the body’.

It is the 12th edition of the pride walk. “We have been doing this since 2003 and each year had been better than the previous one,” said a senior member of Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk.

Mitali,a 36-year-old member of the community,said,“It is for the awareness campaign over the years that people’s outlook towards us have changed. We are no longer only treated as objects of ridicule. We are as normal as anyone else and want equal respect,” and added,“We do not have to hide our orientation and can openly proclaim it on social networking sites.”
