‘Gangrape’ of medical student in Paschim Bardhaman: Two more arrested, one being questioned, say police

Asansol police have arrested two more persons in connection with the gangrape of a medical student of a private medical college in Paschim Bardhaman, taking the total number of arrests in the case to five.

A court later remanded Safiq, 27, and Sheikh Nasiruddin, 24 to police custody for nine days.

The three arrested on Sunday – Apu Bauri, 21, Firdous Shiekh, 23, and Shiekh Riazuddin, 32 – are currently in 10-day police custody.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate) Abhishek Gupta, “All the five persons who were at the spot on the day of the crime have been arrested. Three were arrested yesterday (Sunday). Today, two more have been arrested.”

Gupta said another man, who has been named in the complaint filed by the MBBS student’s father, has not been arrested, and is being interrogated.

“Since the woman student has not filed an official complaint against him, we are questioning him to verify if others were involved in the incident,” the police officer added.

According to police sources, all five accused may be taken to the crime scene for reconstruction of the incident.

According to police, Nasiruddin, 24, a resident of Biraj, was arrested following a night-long interrogation. He was named by the three other suspects who were arrested earlier. A senior police officer said that Nasiruddin’s motorcycle was used by the accused to flee from the crime scene. The bike has also been impounded.

All five have been booked for gangrape and (BNS section 70(1)) and criminal conspiracy (BNS section 3(5)).
