A 64-year-old woman died after she was allegedly assaulted by a former caregiver who returned to her house on Becharam Chatterjee Road with a motive of robbery on Monday, police said, adding that the accused has been detained.

According to police, the victim has been identified as Anita Ghosh, a resident of Parnasree area in Kolkata.

The accused, Sanju Sarkar (34), of Purba Barisha, who used to look after Anita and her husband two years back, came to their house around 9am on Monday to demand money. When Anita refused, an altercation ensued and Sanju attacked her with a knife in her chin and abdomen.

“The accused attacked Anita and when she tried to defend herself, Sanju, too, sustained minor injuries. After the attack, she also tried to steal cash and gold ornaments. The victim’s husband, Arup Ghosh, is bedridden and their son resides in another flat. When locals heard the victim’s cry for help, they alerted the police, who detained the accused. She later confessed to the crime,” police said.

“The victim’s son rushed her to Narayana Hospital in Behala where she was declared brought dead,” police added.
