A major fire broke out at a godown, which was used for storing diesel and owned by Kolkata Port Trust, near Armenian Ghat in the city on Tuesday night. Over 20 fire engines are still struggling to douse the blaze, till the filing of this report.
The fire broke out at around 8 pm. There have been no reports of any injury or casualty so far, sources said. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and the entire area has been cordoned off.
State Fire Minister Sovan Chatterjee, who was at the spot, said, “Highly inflammable products like diesel cannot be stored in a godown. An FIR
will definitely be lodged and actions will be taken as per law.”
“The fire was apparently caused by diesel stored by a ferry service operator nearby,” an official of Kolkata Port Trust told The Indian Express.
Last month, another godown of Kolkata Port Trust in Taratala used for storing chemicals had caught fire.
