Apprehending bloodshed and political clashes in the upcoming elections to 81 municipalities in West Bengal, state Election Commissioner Mira Pandey on Saturday said that she has discussed the issue with representatives of all political parties.

“This issue has been brought to my notice. I held a meeting with the representatives of all political parties and requested them to ensure peaceful elections,” said Pandey.

Significantly, even as most polling booths have been categorised as sensitive, security arrangements in the polling booths seem inadequate with two armed policemen expected to man each polling booth.

“We will not deploy any temporary homeguards in the polling booths. There will be two armed policemen in every polling booth,” said Pandey.

“We have requested the state government to provide us with Central forces, which could be deployed in the sensitive areas. We are, however, yet to receive any reply from the government on the matter,” he added.

The state election commission will issue the notification for civic polls on April 26 — the date on which the model code of conduct will also be enforced.

Every district will have a counting centre with the city expected to have around 15 such centres. The date for counting of votes is June 2.
