With questions being raised at the credibility of the Trinamool Congress with another of its MPs being arrested in the Saradha scam, party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Modi government accusing it of indulging in “political vendetta” against her because she attended a “secular event” in Delhi.
She also dared the Centre to arrest her and impose President’s rule in West Bengal.
“I had been to Delhi to attend a conclave of secular parties at an event to mark Jawaharlal Nehru’s 125 birth anniversary. It has been reciprocated with a CBI arrest,” Mamata said addressing a party meeting here attended by MPs, ministers and MLAs.
She said she will go to such events “a 100 times” and her party will actively support the formation of any secular front. “I accept the challenge thrown before us,” she said, adding she will retaliate if hit.
“Amake jail-e pathak, dekhe nebo (Let them send me to jail, I will see to it. I challenge them to impose President’s rule. We will reply through ballot. We are not slaves of power. We will protest against the selective vendetta against us,” she added.
The day’s meeting was evidently aimed at raising the sagging morale of the party workers who are silently watching the virtual parade of senior party leaders almost every day before the CBI for their alleged complicity in the Saradha scam.
She alleged that Modi and his government has bought over 99 per cent of the media, which never questioned thousands of crores spent by the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections. The same section of the media, she alleged further, was acting to serve the interest of the BJP and engaged in “all sorts of canards” against her party and the government.
Alleging that the country has been experiencing communal instability “from day one of this Modi government”, she said, “they have instigated riots across India —- from Gujarat to Maharashtra. Even Delhi was not spared. BJP came to power with just 31 per cent of votes. 69 per cent people of India do not support them.”
Training guns at Modi, she said in the the past six months, the PM has spent more time in foreign countries than he did in India. “He is busy glorifying himself in foreign countries. Under his leadership the country is up for sale,” she said.
“But what happened to his (Modi’s ) love for the media? He is destroying everything – from regional parties to Press and media. He is no more taking journalists along with him on foreign tours. Journalists are under lock and key now,” she added.
Stating that there was no reason to fear the BJP , in an apparent to party’s national president Amit Shah, Mamata asked “who have several cases of rioting and murder against them, how can they point fingers at us?”
She said the Trinamool Congress was born out of struggle and it would continue to do so.
Coming out in support of Srinjoy Bose, she questioned the CBI move behind his arrest. “If he can be arrested for links with Saradha then why not arrest Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and so many other sportsmen for their links with the Sahara Group? Why not arrest Newspaper owners who had accepted advertisement from the Saradha?” she asked.
The Trinamool Congress will take out a protest rally in Kolkata on November 24 against the CBI actions, she announced.
