Didi,CPM praise KKR in one voice

On Sunday night, delirious fans spilled onto the streets to revel in their team’s IPL win.

On Sunday night, delirious fans spilled onto the streets to revel in their team’s IPL win. On Monday morning, celebrations kicked off at the state secretariat at Writers’ Buildings.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) maiden victory in five years is witnessing bitter political rivals setting aside their differences and joining the chorus to praise a group of young men who have done the city proud.

If Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was quick to announce that there would be a civic reception for the team at Eden Gardens, her political rival,Leader of the Opposition Suryakanta Misra, whose party never saw eye-to-eye with the KKR owners during the Left Front regime, said “he had the time of his life” on Sunday night when he saw Gautam Gambhir and his boys lift the IPL trophy.

“It was a very special feeling. I was all the more happy that two Bengal boys,Manoj Tiwary and Shakib Al Hasan, were at the crease when the victory came,” Misra said.

Shakib, the all-rounder from Bangladesh, and Bengal’s very own Tiwary forged an important partnership at the death to get the team over the line.

The love for the game and their favourite team blurred the geographical borders and, more importantly,it brought Trinamool Congress and Left Front together for the first time.

Ever since Shah Rukh Khan became Bengal’s brand ambassador, the state government has lent a supporting hand to KKR. It partially waived the entertainment tax for the team’s home matches and then Didi herself dropped in at the Eden Gardens to wish the Knights at the start of the tournament.

Naturally, she enjoyed KKR’s triumph. “This is a big achievement. The team from the city has won and we all are proud of that. Shah Rukh is our brand ambassador and his team has won,we want to felicitate the winners on behalf of the state government,” Mamata said on Monday.

The party will start with a road show at Hazra crossing in south Kolkata at 11am on Tuesday, where state urban development minister Firhad Hakim and MP Subrata Bakshi will be present. The team will travel in an open top vehicle with the trophy and will go to Writers’ Buildings where the Chief Minister will receive the stars.

“I will personally welcome the victorious team at the Writers’ and then we all will head to the Eden Gardens where the team will be felicitated in a ceremony,” said Mamata.

The team will be given a civic reception at Eden. A cake with ‘korbo, lorbo, jitbo re’ written on it will be cut and sweets will be distributed. Bengali band Chandrabindu will perform. The celebration will be for ‘maa, mati, manush’,so the entry will be free at Eden. Police commissioner Ranjit Kumar Pachnanda requested the fans to take their seats by 10am.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB),too, will honour the knights. CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya said the team will be felicitated in a separate programme. “We are very happy and the players deserve a standing ovation,” he said.

“I am also happy FOR the fact that as the defending champions Kolkata will get to host the next year’s IPL final,” he added.

Family members of the Knight Riders stars, too, are basking in the glory. Manoj Tiwary’s elder brother Rajkumar distributed sweets in the neighbourhood of their Howrah residence . “Last night I was the happiest man in the world. For the first couple of years,Manoj played for Delhi Daredevils. But we always wanted him to play for his own city and yesterday it was a great day for all of us,” Rajkumar told The Indian Express.
