On the second anniversary of demonetisation, political parties slammed the Narendra Modi government for “ruining” the country’s economy. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been a staunch critic of the move, said the day the policy was implemented was a “dark day”.

“The government cheated our nation with this big #Demonetisation scam. It ruined the economy and the lives of millions. People will punish those who did this,” Mamata said in a tweet on Thursday. On November 8, 2016, the Centre had demonetised old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in an effort to unearth black money.

“DarkDay today is the second anniversary of #DeMonetisation disaster. From the moment it was announced I said so. Renowned economists, common people and all experts now all agree,” the chief minister added. State Congress president Somen Mitra said that the demonetisation move left millions of people jobless.

“The #DestructionByDemonetisation was massive, it shook the economy, rendered millions of people jobless, created a vacuum in the business ecosystem for many Months, affected the poor and middle class badly and left the banks reeling. It was a deliberate sin to benefit a few,” he said in a tweet.

He was also of the view that the effects of demonetisation are still being felt by the people of the country. “The PM had asked for 50 days to judge where his #Demonetisation stood. After 2 years, the jolts of the Herculean blunder are still felt by all, as the nation remembers the ‘anti-people’ tumultuous move, that created a financial chaos in the country. #DestructionBy Demonetisation,” the Congress leader added.

CPM MLA Sujan Chakraborty said, “Two years or 730 days passed. Could any of the promises maintained @narendramodi ? A complete lie, bluff & a period of utter distress to the people!”
