FOR the first time since the Saradha multi-crore chit fund scam rocked the state,Debjani Mukherjee, one of the executive directors of the company who is now in custody, has explained what led to the collapse of the company in a two-page letter that she has handed over to her lawyers. Debjani has also defined her relationship with the company’s CMD Sudipta Sen in the letter.
According to sources, the letter will be made public by Debjanis lawyers tomorrow. While the lawyers refused to divulge the contents of the letter,it could be gathered that Debjani was driven by the urge to put some records straight in the backdrop of various media reports appearing in connection with the Saradha collapse as well as her relationship with Sudipta Sen.
While coming out from the court today in Bidhannagar,Debjani was asked by the mediapersons about her role in the company. My lawyers will say whatever is needed to be said, she replied.
While contacted,Debjani’s lawyer Anirban Guha Thakurata said,”My client has cooperated with the police since the beginning. She is fine now though she was suffering from some illness a few days ago. She has handed over a letter to us ,which we will release tomorrow at a press conference. She has got several things to say which are still unspoken.”
The same question was put to Sudipta Sen and he replied: “I will tell everything after the investigation gets over.”
According to sources close to Debjani, the letter was written in police custody avoiding police scrutiny. Debjani,in the letter, has reportedly sought to explain the “root cause” of the company going bust and those responsible for it.
The letter, handed over by Debjani a day ahead of her production before the court in Bidhannagar today, has reportedly answered “several unanswered”questions on the relationship between Sudipta Sen and herself.
“The letter is handwritten and is in English,” said a source.
Sudipta and Debjani were produced before the Bidhannagar court today with both of them were remanded to police custody till May 18.
