A Deputy Commissioner of Police, along with eight other police officials, on Wednesday were injured when BJP trade cell workers allegedly indulged in brick batting during a rally forcing police to resort to lathi charge to disperse the demonstrators. Twelve party workers were also injured in the clash which took place in front of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, police said.

The BJP workers were trying to gherao the KMC building, and attempted to break through a police barricade put before the building. Amidst the scuffle, DCP (Central) D P Singh, was hit by a brick. Police had to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Fifteen BJP workers were detained in connection with the incident to be produced before the court on Thursday,  a senior officer of New Market police station said, adding that the situation was now “under control”.

Senior BJP members, however, denied involvement of their party workers in the assault and alleged a foul play.

General Secretary of the BJP Trade Cell, Dilip Ghosh said, “We had organised a peaceful rally and were supposed to gherao the main gate of the KMC headquarters. However, we were stopped by the police. There were miscreants who mingled with the crowd and tried to disrupt our rally and we suspect that the unfortunate incident was the handiwork of one such goons.”

Ashim Sarkar, state general secretary, too, made similar allegations. “There were about 700 of our traders’ cell members who took out a rally in protest of the unfulfilled assurances of the board and against corruption within KMC.

We have seen video footages where the DCP got hit. It was clear from the angle that the brick had been thrown from the KMC building. We suspect it was the work of an outsider or some other party worker to disrupt our programme.

Police have arrested our men. We would request the administration to look into it and arrest those responsible and not hold our innocent workers guilty,” he said.

BJP state president Rahul Sinha, who is in Murshidabad, said over phone,”It is unfortunate and shameful to see that a police official has been attacked. However, what I have learnt from the party is that none of our members were involved.”

“We have arrested 15 protestor who would be produced at the court tomorrow,” said.
