A day after a group of alleged Trinamool Congress workers assaulted the principal and some other teachers of Meghnad Saha College,at Itahar in North Dinajpur, after the wife of a party leader was caught cheating in exam, the police Wednesday registered counter-cases.

While principal Swapna Mukherjee filed an FIR against TMC leader and Itahar zilla parishad member Gautam Paul and his wife Pompa Paul accusing them of manhandling her and vandalising the institute premises,Pompa,on her part, filed a counter FIR against three persons, including Mukherjee, accusing them of snatching her gold chain and molesting her.

Police sources said that Pompa,in her FIR has alleged that while the principal and a woman professor pinned down her hands,an assistant professor and a group D staff member, both males, frisked her.

Following Pompa’s complaint,Education Minister Bratya Basu directed Itahar MLA Amal Acharya to look into the matter and report to him. Acharya, within hours, said that it was “not correct for two males to frisk Pompa”.

Incidentally,Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim hinted at a conspiracy theory, pointing a finger at the principal. “If you look into it,you will find that she is the wife of a CPM leader and has done it on purpose,” he told reporters in Kolkata.

Swapna, meanwhile, denied the allegations saying there was no question of frisking Pompa as the chit, which she had brought, was already seized. Referring to Acharya’s statement, she said the MLA was not present when the incident took place and should not have made such a hasty comment. “If the state wants a probe,it should be done by a neutral agency and not by a government representative,” she said.

On Tuesday,Pompa was caught red-handed,copying answers from a couple of sheets while taking a sociology test. Her paper was seized after which she left the place and called up her husband, who, allegedly with other TMC supporters, came to the college and vandalised the place, broke furniture and roughed up teachers and the principal alleging that Pompa was manhandled.

Sudev Roy,a part-time professor, who was manhandled and has been admitted to Raigunj District Hospital with injuries, said,“I have been a part-time teacher for nearly 10 years and have not faced this kind of situation ever. I am one of those who had voted for the change but not for the kind we are seeing now.”

SP Akhilesh Chaturvedi confirmed receiving the complaints. “Both the principal and Pompa have put in their complaints. We are looking into the matter. Investigations are on,” he said.
