In line with the state government’s stand on the recent crib deaths in Kolkata,Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad said the children were brought in critical conditions and that the doctors did everything that was required.
“The doctors gave their best to save the children,but the children were referred to in very critical state which caused their deaths,” said Azad,who was on a day-long visit here. He met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and “discussed the issues with her”.
The minister visited the proposed site for the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Rajarhat. “It will cost around Rs 540 crore and built on a sprawling campus of 10 acres. It would be a model hospital with advanced research facilities,” he said.
But his review visit of the Medical College Hospital,the construction work for which was undertaken by the state government after the Centre outlaid Rs 120 crore under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana,saw him expressing dissatisfaction over the pace of work.
“The new outdoor patient department,academia and auditorium is complete,but that of super-specialty is yet to begin. Officials have cited evacuation as reason for the delay. Fresh tenders would soon be floated and the work is expected to begin in a few months’ time,” the minister said.
The super-specialty hospital is part of the Centre’s upgradation scheme of 13 medical institutions in 10 states in the country.
The minister was presented with a list of demands by TMC MLA and secretary of the Indian Medical Association,Bengal Chapter,Nirmal Majhi.
“Besides requesting funds for for setting up another campus of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),we have also asked the Metro railway station to be named after the Medical college,and also declare the day Dr Madhusudan Gupta first dissected a body here in 1840 as medical teachers’ day,” he said.
