CPM’s crushing defeat in the recently concluded panchayat polls was the topic of discussion at the 15th state conference of the party, with several party members accusing the present leadership of not providing the desired results.

The extended session will continue through the weekend and sources say there might be a reshuffle in the party’s organisational set-up. The extended state conference is being attended by Prakash Karat – the CPM all India general secretary.

CPM top brass, particularly state secretary Biman Bose and others received flak for having failed to project fresh faces in the leadership hierarchy. Other members were critical of the organisational deficiency as the main reasons why the party failed in the panchayat polls.

Several senior comrades alleged the party leadership had failed to capitalise on issues of popular dissent like the Saradha Group scam in which a large number of people were affected and crisis in the agricultural sector.

The party’s draft political and organisational report submitted by Biman Bose Friday, however, attributed the reason for defeat in the panchayat polls to the ruling party’s terror tactics.
